How We Get Rid of Cockroaches
Every cockroach problem starts with the right identification, because the treatment depends on the species. Here’s how we work:If you’re seeing small, light brown roaches in your kitchen or bathroom, call us soon. German cockroaches multiply quickly, and the sooner we start, the easier the cleanout.
Dealing With German Cockroaches?
German cockroaches live and breed entirely indoors, and they’re the hardest roach to get rid of. They need a dedicated cleanout: an initial treatment plus 2 to 3 follow-up visits, each about one to two weeks apart, depending on the size of the infestation. Sanitation is critical, and most customers stay on a yearly program afterward to keep them from coming back. Common Cockroaches in Middle Tennessee
Roaches that wander in from outside:
- American cockroaches: The largest common cockroach in Tennessee, about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long and reddish-brown. Often called palmetto bugs or water bugs, they live in sewers, drains, and damp crawl spaces and wander inside, especially in hot summer months.
- Smoky brown cockroaches: Large, dark mahogany roaches that live in trees, gutters, mulch, and woodpiles. They’re strong fliers drawn to lights at night, which is how many end up inside.
- Oriental cockroaches: Shiny black roaches that love cool, damp places like crawl spaces, basements, and floor drains.
Roaches that breed indoors:
- German cockroaches: The most common cockroach inside Tennessee homes. They’re light brown, about 1/2 to 5/8 inch long, with two dark stripes on the shield behind the head, and they stick close to kitchens and bathrooms.
- Brown-banded cockroaches: Small roaches that spread throughout a home, often hiding up high in bedrooms, living rooms, and electronics. They’re easy to mix up with German roaches, and the difference matters for treatment.
Not sure which one you have? Our cockroach identification guide can help, or your Pest Pro will identify it during your free inspection. Damp crawl spaces draw several of these roaches, so ask about our crawl space services too.

Cockroach Control FAQs
How much does cockroach control cost?
Roaches that wander in from outside, like American and smoky brown cockroaches, are covered under general pest control, which starts at $60 per visit. German cockroaches need a dedicated cleanout. Either way, your free inspection gives you the exact price up front.
What’s a palmetto bug?
“Palmetto bug” is a common name for the American cockroach, the largest common cockroach in Tennessee. They usually live outdoors and in sewers, drains, and damp crawl spaces, and wander inside in warm weather.
How many visits does it take to get rid of German cockroaches?
Usually an initial treatment plus 2 to 3 follow-ups. Our German cockroach page explains the full cleanout.
How do I prepare for a German cockroach treatment?
Sanitation is critical. Clean under appliances and cabinets, empty kitchen and bathroom cabinets, clear countertops, take out the garbage, and remove pet food. Plan for people and pets to be out of your home for 4 hours after treatment. Our preparation checklist walks you through it.
Can I use store-bought roach spray after treatment?
Please don’t. Store-bought pesticides can interfere with our products and make the treatment less effective.
Are cockroaches dangerous?
According to the EPA, cockroach droppings, shed skins, and saliva can trigger asthma and allergies, especially in children, and cockroaches can carry germs that cause food-borne illness.
Do roaches come back after treatment?
If they do, call us and your Pest Pro comes back at no charge. Our Whatever It Takes Guarantee also means a refund of your last service, a free re-treat, and if you’re still not satisfied, we’ll pay for a competitor.
Why am I seeing big roaches in the summer?
American cockroaches often wander indoors in hot summer months, and smoky brown cockroaches are drawn to lights at night. Both are covered under general pest control.
