Why Mice and Rats Move In Every Fall
As Middle Tennessee nights cool down in October, mice and rats look for warm shelter. A gap the size of a dime is enough for a mouse to get inside.

How we get rid of rodents
Trapping alone doesn’t solve a rodent problem if mice and rats can still get in. Our rodent control combines three steps:
The three bold-lead lines:
Exclusion. We seal gaps around pipes, vents, garage doors, rooflines, and foundations with rodent-proof materials.
Trapping. We place traps inside, in attics, crawl spaces, basements, and garages, and remove the rodents we catch.
Exterior bait stations. Tamper-resistant stations around the outside of your home reduce rodents before they reach the house.
Our exclusion warranty
Every entry point we seal is covered by a warranty. If mice or rats get back in through an entry point we sealed, we’ll come back and fix it at no extra cost.
Health risks from mice and rats
Rodents are more than a nuisance. The CDC notes that mice and rats can spread diseases through their droppings, urine, saliva, and bites, and by contaminating food. Diseases linked to rodents in the United States include:
- Salmonellosis, from food or surfaces contaminated by droppings
- Hantavirus, a serious illness spread by breathing in dust from droppings and urine. It’s very rare in Tennessee: the state’s only reported cases, in 2016 and 2017, were linked to pet rats brought in from another state.
Leptospirosis, from water or soil contaminated by rodent urine. A Lincoln Memorial University study found the bacteria in more than 60% of small wild mammals tested, mostly rodents, in the Cumberland Gap region of East Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia.
Rat-bite fever, from bites or scratchesMouse droppings and dander can also trigger allergies and asthma, especially in children. Never sweep or vacuum rodent droppings, which can stir germs into the air. Our attic cleanup removes droppings and nesting material and sanitizes affected areas. If you’re worried about an illness, talk with your doctor.

From our files: hundreds of mice in a Spring Hill home
A family in Spring Hill with two small children called us when mice had taken over their home. During our inspection, we found hundreds of mice and dozens of tunnels running through the insulation in both the attic and the crawl space. The family was living with mice above them, below them, and inside their walls.
Traps alone couldn’t keep up with a population that size, so we moved them to our intensive treatment. Along with sealing entry points and more frequent visits, we applied a tracking powder, a professional product that only licensed technicians can use, in the attic and crawl space, away from the family’s living areas. Once the intensive treatment began, we started finding dead mice and watched the population drop until it was under control.
The family no longer shares their home with mice, and they’re still a U.S. Pest customer today.e 1985, and is a member of the National Pest Management Association and the Tennessee Pest Management Association.
Rodent Control FAQs
How do I know if I have mice or rats?
Look for droppings in drawers and pantries, gnaw marks, shredded nesting material, and scratching noises in walls or the attic at night. A free inspection will confirm what you have and how it’s getting in.
Why do mice come inside in the fall?
As temperatures drop in October and November, mice look for warm shelter and food. Fall is the best time to seal entry points before they settle in for winter.
How do mice get into my house?
A mouse can fit through a gap the size of a dime. Common entry points include gaps around pipes and utility lines, vents, garage doors, rooflines, and the foundation.
How long does it take to get rid of mice?
In your living areas, we use traps, and bait stays outside in tamper-resistant stations. For heavy infestations, our intensive treatment may include professional products that only licensed technicians can apply, placed in attics, crawl spaces, or wall voids away from where your family lives, following label directions.
Do you use poison inside my home?
No. Most treatment happens outside, around your foundation. If we need to drill through a slab or porch, we’ll tell you ahead of time and explain any steps to take, like keeping pets away from treated areas until they dry.
Can the exterior bait stations hurt my pets?
Our exterior bait stations are tamper-resistant and locked, which helps keep pets and children out of the bait. Tell us about your pets, and we’ll plan station placement around them.
Do you clean up after rodents?
Yes. Our attic cleanup removes droppings and nesting material and sanitizes the areas rodents contaminated.
Is your sealing work guaranteed?
Yes. Entry points we seal are covered by a warranty. If rodents get back in through an entry point we sealed, we’ll fix it at no extra cost.
Do you handle squirrels or other wildlife?
No. We focus on mice and rats. For squirrels, raccoons, or other wildlife, we recommend a licensed wildlife removal company.
