Brown Recluse Spider Removal for Middle Tennessee Homes

Is It Really a Brown Recluse?

Plenty of spiders get blamed. A brown recluse is evenly tan to brown, with a dark violin shape behind the head, plain legs with no bands, and six eyes instead of eight. Wolf spiders, the most common mix-up, are bigger, hairier, and striped.
Our comprehensive treatment approach eliminates existing spider populations.

Your Family’s Safety Comes First

Brown recluse bites are uncommon and usually happen when a spider gets trapped against skin while you’re getting dressed, putting on shoes, or rolling over in bed. Most bites heal without serious problems, but some form a slow-healing sore. If you think you’ve been bitten, wash the area, apply a cold compress, elevate it, and seek medical care, especially for a child or a wound that’s spreading or darkening.

Why Brown Recluses Are So Stubborn

A few habits make brown recluses frustrating to deal with on your own:
  • They hide by day in wall voids, clutter, and cardboard, and hunt at night
  • They can go months without food
  • They don’t build big, visible webs, so they’re easy to miss
  • Cluttered closets and storage give them endless places to hide

Prepare for Your Brown Recluse Treatment

Brown recluse control works best when we can reach the places these spiders hide. Our checklist shows you how to prepare.
  • Move items from under beds onto the beds
  • Empty closets, including clothing and stored items
  • Empty lower cabinets and the areas under sinks
  • Seal cardboard boxes with tape, and switch to plastic bins with tight lids over time
  • Pull large furniture at least 2 feet away from the walls
  • Unplug electronics, and cover fish tanks with a damp towel with the filter and pump turned off

Where Brown Recluses Hide in Your Home

  • Closets, especially on the floor among shoes and stored clothing
  • Cardboard boxes in attics, basements, and garages
  • Behind baseboards, furniture, and picture frames
  • Under bed skirts and in rarely used beds
  • Crawl spaces and unfinished basements
  • Inside shoes, gloves, and clothing left on the floor

Our brown recluse identification guide has close-up photos and more on telling them apart from wolf spiders.

What a Brown Recluse Bite Looks Like

A bite is often painless at first. Redness and pain can develop over several hours, and some bites form a blister and a sore that slowly worsens. Most heal without serious complications. In a small number of cases, a bite causes a deep wound that heals slowly, or rarely a whole-body reaction with fever, chills, or nausea, which is more common in children.

Many wounds blamed on brown recluses turn out to be skin infections, so if you can safely capture the spider, bring it with you when you see a doctor.

What You Can Do Between Visits

  • Trade cardboard for plastic: Store items in sealed plastic bins, since cardboard gives brown recluses perfect hiding spots.
  • Shake it out: Check clothing and shoes before you put them on, especially anything left on the floor or in storage.
  • Free up the bed: Move beds away from walls, remove bed skirts, and keep bedding off the floor.
  • Cut the clutter: Fewer hiding places means fewer spiders.
  • Watch for activity: Sticky traps along walls and behind furniture show where they’re moving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it a brown recluse or a wolf spider?

Brown recluses are smaller, smooth, and evenly colored, with a violin mark and six eyes. Wolf spiders are bigger, hairier, and striped, with eight eyes, two of them noticeably large. If you’re not sure, we’ll identify it at your free inspection.

Is brown recluse treatment included in general pest control?

No. It’s a completely separate service with its own treatment plan and pricing.

How much does brown recluse treatment cost?

It depends on your home and how far the spiders have spread. Your Pest Pro will give you a firm price at your free inspection, before any work begins.

Why is there so much prep?

Brown recluses hide in closets, under beds, in cabinets, and in boxes. Clearing those spaces lets us reach where they live. Our preparation checklist lists every step.

What should I do if a brown recluse bites me?

Wash the area, apply a cold compress, elevate it, and seek medical care, especially for a child or a wound that’s spreading or darkening. If you can safely capture the spider, bring it with you.

Are brown recluses really in Middle Tennessee?

Yes. All of Tennessee is within the brown recluse’s native range.

Can brown recluses really go months without eating?

Yes. That’s one reason they’re so hard to get rid of without professional treatment.

Should I get rid of my cardboard boxes?

Switching to plastic bins with tight lids helps a lot, because cardboard gives brown recluses perfect hiding spots. Before treatment, seal any boxes you keep with tape.
