Why Restaurants Need a Real Pest Program

Restaurants give pests everything they need: food, water, warmth, and places to hide. Pests also arrive every day with food deliveries, produce boxes, and linens.

  • A health inspection finding can lower your score or close you until it’s fixed
  • One cockroach seen by a guest can become a one-star review that stays online for years
  • Rodents and stored product pests contaminate dry goods and inventory

Nashville’s restaurant scene is booming, and so are its pests

Middle Tennessee has more restaurants than ever, and more restaurants mean more pest pressure. Our restaurant pest control program is built for three things that make this region different:

Busy dining districts. From Broadway and the Gulch to East Nashville, Germantown, and 12 South, and out to Franklin, Murfreesboro, and Hendersonville.

Older buildings. Downtown kitchens often share walls, alleys, and dumpsters with neighbors, so pests move between businesses.

Daily deliveries. More deliveries mean more chances for pests to come in on boxes, produce, and linens.

Being ready for your health inspection

Tennessee’s food service rules require kitchens to be kept free of insects and rodents, and a health inspector wants to see proof that you’re managing pests. We help with a current service log showing every visit, finding, and product used; product labels and safety data sheets on file; sealed gaps and entry points; clear recommendations for your staff; and a quick-response visit if you spot activity before your inspection.

Where German cockroaches hide: real photos from our Pest Pros

These photos come from two real jobs handled by Matthew, a Pest Pro on our commercial team: one in a commercial kitchen and one in a home. German cockroaches hide in the same kinds of places in both: warm, dark, and close to water.

Newborn German cockroach nymphs clustered around an egg case on a U.S. Pest monitoring board
Babies hatching on a monitoring board

The tan capsule is an egg case, and the tiny dark bugs around it are newborn nymphs that just hatched from it. Each egg case usually holds 30 to 40 eggs. That’s why one roach is never just one roach.

German cockroaches packed around a pipe bracket behind a water line. The dark specks are droppings. Warm, dark spots next to water are their favorite places to hide.

In a home, dozens of egg cases collected in a lid on a table. Many are split open, which means they’ve already hatched.

Adults, babies of every size, shed skins, and droppings. Monitoring boards show our Pest Pros how big the problem is, and whether treatment is working.

Standing water full of roaches, newborn nymphs, and dozens of egg cases. Warmth from the cooling unit, darkness, and constant water make it an ideal hiding place.

Why it matters

German cockroach droppings, shed skins, and dead roaches contain allergens that can trigger asthma. And one female can produce 5 to 8 egg cases in her lifetime, adding up to 200 to 250 eggs. A problem you can see is usually a much bigger problem out of sight.

How Matthew took care of it

  • Baits and a liquid treatment, placed where the roaches were living and traveling
  • An intensive first treatment, followed by a scheduled follow-up visit
  • Teamwork with the customer. Between the first treatment and the follow-up, the customer did a thorough cleaning.

That last step matters. Cleaning removes the crumbs, grease, and spills roaches feed on, so the bait becomes the best meal around.

Hotel restaurants and banquet kitchens

Hotel kitchens rarely get a quiet night. One property can run a restaurant, a lobby bar, room service, and a banquet kitchen feeding hundreds of wedding or conference guests at once. Banquet kitchens also swing between huge pre-event deliveries and long quiet stretches, which gives pests time to settle in behind equipment and in storage.

  • Banquet prep and holding areas, where large deliveries and rolling racks come and go
  • Room service pantries on guest floors
  • Lobby bars and their floor drains
  • Loading docks the kitchen shares with laundry and housekeeping

We cover every food service area in a hotel under one program with one service log, and we schedule around your event calendar so treatment never collides with a banquet. For guest rooms and bed bug protection, see our hotel pest control page.

Tips for your kitchen team

  • Clean floor drains weekly and keep drain covers in place.
  • Store dry goods off the floor in sealed containers.
  • Break down delivery boxes right away and take them out of the kitchen.
  • Keep back doors closed, with door sweeps in place.
  • Keep dumpster lids closed and the dumpster area clean.

Free checklists for your kitchen team

Three one-page checklists built for commercial kitchens. Post them by the dish station, in dry storage, or in the manager’s office so every shift knows what to look for.

We’re in the people business

Restaurants run on hospitality, and so do we. Our Pest Pros arrive in pressed button-down shirts and logoed ties, get to know your kitchen staff, and treat your restaurant like it belongs to family. We’ll tell your chef or manager exactly what we found and why it matters, in plain language, and we’ll never sell you a service your kitchen doesn’t need.

For us, value means more than price. It’s showing up before your doors open, picking up the phone when a cockroach appears in the middle of dinner service, and standing behind every visit with our Whatever It Takes Guarantee: a refund of your last service, a free re-treat, and if you’re still not happy, we’ll pay for a competitor to help.

How our commercial program works

  • Free kitchen inspection. We inspect your kitchen, dish area, dry storage, drains, dumpster area, and exterior, and look for pest activity and entry points.
  • Written plan and price. You get a pest management plan built for your restaurant, with a clear schedule and one invoice.
  • Scheduled service. We service around your hours, before opening or after close.
  • Reports and callbacks. You get written records after every visit, and callbacks between visits are included.

Our commercial division is led by James Hawkins, Regional Commercial General Manager, who has more than 20 years with U.S. Pest, holds Tennessee licenses in pest control, termite control, and public health pest control, and is LEED certified.

Restaurant Pest Control FAQs

Will pest control disrupt service?

No. We service before you open or after you close.

Do you provide records for health inspections?

Yes. We keep a service log at your restaurant that documents each visit, what we found, what we used, and our recommendations.

Are treatments safe around food?

Yes. We use targeted gel baits and crack-and-crevice treatments away from food prep surfaces, following label directions for food-handling areas.

How often should a restaurant be serviced?

Most restaurants need at least monthly service. High-volume kitchens often need more frequent visits.

Can you come quickly if we see pests before an inspection?

Yes. Call us and we’ll respond within 24 hours, and our 24-hour emergency service is available for urgent problems.

Why do we keep getting fruit flies even though we clean?

Fruit flies and drain flies usually breed inside drains, grease traps, and bar drains, where regular cleaning doesn’t reach. We treat the breeding sites directly.

Our restaurant shares walls with other businesses. Can pests come from next door?

Yes, especially in older downtown buildings. We seal entry points on your side and treat the shared walls pests travel through.

Do you service multiple locations?

Yes. Restaurant groups can have all their locations on one program, with consistent service and one point of contact.

Do I need a long-term contract?

No. We don’t require a long-term contract. Most of our commercial customers have stayed with us for years.

How do I get started?

Call our Commercial Regional Office at 615-757-6710 or schedule a free kitchen inspection. We’ll inspect your kitchen, storage, and exterior, and give you a written plan and price.
