Why fleas are so hard to get rid of

Fleas don’t stay on your pet. Most of a flea problem lives in your carpet, furniture, pet bedding and yard as eggs, larvae and cocoons.

Adult fleas lay eggs on your pet, and the eggs fall off wherever your pet goes. They hatch and develop out of sight. The cocoon stage is tough and can wait until it senses movement or warmth before the adult comes out.

That’s why spraying once or treating only the pet rarely works. You have to treat the home, the yard and the pet, and follow up.

Can fleas make my family or pets sick?

For most families, fleas are an itchy nuisance, not a health emergency. But they’re worth taking seriously, especially with pets and young children in the house.

  • Pets can develop flea allergy dermatitis, an itchy skin reaction to flea bites, and can get tapeworms by swallowing fleas while grooming.
  • Children can occasionally get tapeworms the same way, by accidentally swallowing an infected flea.
  • Cats can carry the bacteria that cause cat scratch disease, which fleas spread between cats. People can get it from a scratch.
  • Anyone who scratches bites hard enough to break the skin can end up with a skin infection.

The good news: treating your home and yard, and keeping pets on a vet-recommended flea preventive, breaks the cycle. If a pet is scratching constantly or anyone in your family has symptoms after flea bites, check with your veterinarian or doctor.

In your yard: fleas and ticks with our mosquito service

If your pets spend time outside, the yard can keep bringing fleas back in. Our monthly mosquito service treats your yard for mosquitoes, ticks and fleas on every visit. It runs year-round, focusing on ticks and fleas in the winter months. Treating the yard is the best way to keep a flea problem from coming back.

  • Yard flea and tick control is part of our monthly mosquito service, starting at $75 a month based on yard size.

Tips to help your treatment work

  • Keep your pets on a flea preventive your veterinarian recommends. We treat your home and yard, and your vet treats your pet.
  • Vacuum floors, rugs and furniture daily after treatment, and empty the vacuum outside.
  • Wash pet bedding, throw blankets and rugs in hot water.
  • Keep your grass mowed and limit wildlife hiding spots, since raccoons, opossums and stray animals can carry fleas into your yard.

How it works

  1. Free inspection. We check your home and yard and show you where fleas are.
  2. Treatment. We treat inside, outside or both.
  3. Follow-up visit. We come back to re-treat if needed.
  4. Ongoing yard protection. Our monthly mosquito service keeps treating the yard for fleas and ticks.

Flea Control FAQs

How much does flea treatment cost?

Indoor flea treatment starts at $300, depending on the size of your home and the infestation, and includes a scheduled follow-up visit. Yard flea and tick control is part of our mosquito service, starting at $75 a month.

Do I need a follow-up treatment?

We schedule one with every indoor flea treatment. New fleas can keep hatching from cocoons after the first visit, so the follow-up makes sure we get them.

Will I still see fleas after treatment?

It’s common to see a few for a short time as new fleas hatch. Keep vacuuming daily. If you’re still seeing fleas after the follow-up, call us.

Can fleas make people or pets sick?

Fleas can cause itchy allergic reactions in pets and can pass tapeworms to pets, and occasionally to children, when an infected flea is swallowed. Cats can also spread cat scratch disease, which fleas carry between cats. Treating your home, yard and pets breaks the cycle.

Does my regular pest control plan cover fleas?

Indoor flea treatment is a separate service. Yard fleas are covered by our monthly mosquito service, which also treats for ticks.

Do I need to treat my pets too?

Yes. Ask your veterinarian about a flea preventive. Treating the home, yard and pet together is what stops the cycle.
