What a Cockroach Problem Costs a Business

Cockroaches don’t just look bad. In a commercial setting, they put real things at risk:
  • Failed health inspections and the risk of a forced closure
  • Reputation damage from a single photo or online review
  • Contaminated food and supplies that have to be thrown out
  • Health concerns for staff and guests, since cockroach allergens can trigger asthma
  • Audit findings that can put contracts and certifications at risk

The good news: cockroach problems in commercial spaces are very solvable with the right products, placed in the right spots, on a consistent schedule, with records that prove the work.

Know Your Cockroach

  • German cockroaches: the main commercial pest. Adults are about 1/2 to 5/8 inch long with two dark stripes behind the head. They live in kitchens, bars, and bathrooms, near dishwashers, stoves, sinks, and warm equipment. A female carries her egg capsule, holding about 30 to 48 eggs, until it’s ready to hatch, and can produce four to eight capsules in her lifetime, which is why populations explode so quickly.
  • American cockroaches: the big ones, about 1 1/2 inches long, reddish-brown, with wings, and able to fly short distances. They live in sewers, steam tunnels, boiler rooms, and basements, and travel into buildings through plumbing, drains, and open doors.
  • Smokybrown cockroaches: dark, outdoor roaches that move in from landscaping, mulch, and eaves, especially around entrances and loading areas.

Each one calls for a different approach, so identifying the species is the first step in every commercial program we build.

American Cockroaches in Warehouses and Loading Docks

Warehouses, distribution centers, and manufacturing plants face a different cockroach problem than restaurants. Big dock doors, floor drains, pallets, and warm, cluttered corners give American cockroaches everything they need, and a population can build for months before anyone notices.

Our commercial team has seen just how far it can go. We’ve walked into new warehouse accounts in Middle Tennessee and found hundreds of thousands of American cockroaches, adults flying and crawling, covering entire floors, warehouse bays, and the areas open to the outside, like loading docks. Problems on that scale are fixable, but they take a plan built for the size of the building.

  • Dock and door exclusion: we identify gaps around dock doors, seals, levelers, and door sweeps so you know exactly what to fix to stop the flow from outside.
  • Drain and sewer entry points: floor drains, trench drains, and plumbing chases get inspected and treated, since American cockroaches often travel up from sewer lines.
  • Exterior perimeter treatment around foundations, dumpster pads, and landscaping where they live outside.
  • Interior treatment and baiting in harborage areas, wall voids, and around racking and equipment.
  • Monitoring across the facility so you can see activity drop bay by bay.
  • Weekly service until it’s under control, then a regular schedule to keep it that way, with logbook records for your auditors.

Why Spraying Alone Doesn’t Work

University extension entomologists have found that baseboard sprays are largely ineffective against German cockroaches and can even scatter them deeper into walls and equipment. What works is placing gel baits and bait stations right in the cracks, crevices, and equipment voids where cockroaches hide, rotating bait formulas so they don’t learn to avoid them, and pairing treatment with sanitation and repairs that take away food, water, and hiding spots.

Our Commercial Cockroach Control Program

  • Monitoring: sticky monitors show exactly where activity is concentrated and confirm when it’s gone.
  • Targeted baiting: gel baits and bait stations placed in harborage areas, inside and behind equipment, and in wall voids.
  • Bait rotation to keep cockroaches from developing bait aversion.
  • Drain and moisture attention for American cockroaches that travel through plumbing.
  • Sanitation and repair recommendations, like sealing cracks, fixing leaks, and cleaning grease buildup, written into your service report.
  • A schedule that fits the problem: weekly service when activity is high, then monthly service to keep it from coming back.

Where Cockroaches Hide in Commercial Spaces

  • Under and behind dish machines, fryers, stoves, and ice machines
  • Inside equipment motors, control panels, and refrigerator gaskets
  • Bars, beverage stations, and soda lines
  • Breakrooms, restrooms, and laundry rooms
  • Storage and receiving areas, especially in cardboard boxes from deliveries
  • Floor drains, mop sinks, and plumbing chases

Free Download: German Cockroach Prevention Checklist for Businesses

Give your managers and staff a simple way to keep German cockroaches from getting a foothold. Our free checklist covers seven areas:

  • Deliveries and incoming goods
  • Sealing hiding places
  • Taking away water
  • Kitchen and equipment cleaning
  • Trash and recycling
  • Warning signs to watch for
  • Making it a routine your team can keep

Post it in the kitchen or back office and use it alongside your pest activity logbook.

Records That Satisfy Inspectors and Auditors

When a health inspector or auditor asks for your pest control records, you’ll have them. Each location keeps a pest activity logbook on site, and our commercial client portal stores your invoices and treatment paperwork online. We provide written service reports when your business requires them, build trend reports with your team, and help you prepare for health inspections and third-party audits, including AIB, food safety, and hospital accreditation. Need a certificate of insurance or vendor-compliance registration? We handle that too.

Help Your Team Help Us

Your staff sees the building every day, and a few habits make treatment work faster:

  • Clean grease and food debris from under and behind equipment daily.
  • Empty trash at close, and keep dumpster lids shut.
  • Report leaks and standing water right away.
  • Break down and remove delivery boxes quickly instead of storing them.
  • Write any sighting in the logbook with the time and location, so your Pest Pro knows where to focus.

Service on Your Schedule

Restaurants, hotels, and healthcare facilities can’t close for pest control, so we come before opening, after close, overnight, or on weekends. Commercial calls get a same-day response whenever possible, always within 24 hours, and our 24/7 line at 615-590-1260 covers commercial emergencies. Businesses with several locations get one point of contact and one invoice. See our emergency pest control service for urgent situations.

Industries We Serve

Cockroach control is part of our programs for restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools, apartment communities, food trucks, retail stores, office buildings, property managers, and warehouses. Dealing with mice or rats too? See our commercial rodent control.

Agreements, Investment, and Our Guarantee

Most commercial accounts are on a one-year agreement, with no long-term contracts beyond that. After your free site inspection, we’ll go over investment options based on your facility and how much activity we find, and the Whatever It Takes Guarantee covers commercial accounts just like our residential customers.

Our commercial team is led by James Hawkins, Regional Commercial General Manager, a LEED-certified, Tennessee-licensed professional in pest control, termite control, and public health pest control with more than 20 years at U.S. Pest.

Commercial Cockroach Control FAQs

Why do cockroaches keep coming back after spraying?

Sprays often miss the cracks and equipment voids where German cockroaches breed, and baseboard sprays can scatter them. Targeted baiting, bait rotation, and sanitation are what stop them.

How fast can you get cockroaches under control?

It depends on the size of the infestation, but we start with an inspection the same day whenever possible, always within 24 hours, and can service weekly until activity drops.

Will treatment disrupt my business?

No. We service before opening, after close, overnight, or on weekends.

Can you help us pass a health inspection or audit?

Yes. We keep a logbook at each location, provide written reports and trend reports, and help clients prepare for health inspections and third-party audits, including AIB, food safety, and hospital accreditation.

Where do cockroaches come from in a commercial kitchen?

Often in deliveries and cardboard boxes, through drains and plumbing, or from neighboring businesses. Warm equipment, water, and food keep them there.

Why does my warehouse have so many cockroaches?

Usually American cockroaches coming in through dock doors, floor drains, and sewer lines, then breeding in warm, cluttered corners and around pallets. We’ve found infestations in the hundreds of thousands in new warehouse accounts, and they’re fixable with exclusion, drain treatment, and a facility-wide plan.

Can American cockroaches fly?

Yes. Adults have wings and can fly short distances, especially in warm conditions.

Do you require a long-term contract?

No. Most commercial accounts are on a one-year agreement, with no long-term contracts beyond that.

Is your commercial cockroach control guaranteed?

Yes. The Whatever It Takes Guarantee applies to commercial accounts.

What kind of cockroaches do Middle Tennessee businesses get?

Mostly German cockroaches indoors, plus American cockroaches from drains and basements and smokybrown cockroaches from outside.
