Just as their name suggests, soldier termites are responsible for defending their colony. The main aim of soldier termites is to protect their colony from enemies (which are mostly ants).
They do not damage wood themselves.
Nevertheless, they can be an indicator of termite infestation. If you have termites in your home, you likely wouldn’t know it until the damage became obvious.
