Portland Pest Control — Protecting Tennessee’s Strawberry Capital for 40+ Years

Family-owned pest protection for a historic railroad town that grew from strawberry fields into a distribution hub — for over 40 years.

Portland got its start in 1859 as Richland Station, a Louisville and Nashville Railroad depot built on land donated by local landowner Thomas Buntin, and was renamed Portland in the 1880s to avoid confusion with another Tennessee town called Richland. The city, which straddles the Sumner and Robertson county line, built its identity on strawberries: at its peak, local growers worked roughly 2,000 acres of strawberry fields, shipping as many as 115 railcars of berries out in a single day and even air-shipping strawberries to England during World War II. The Middle Tennessee Strawberry Festival, held every May since 1940, still draws more than 40,000 visitors and remains Sumner County’s longest-running festival, even as large-scale strawberry farming has given way to the distribution and warehouse facilities that now anchor Portland’s economy on both sides of the county line. That mix, railroad-era downtown, remaining farmland, and a growing industrial and distribution corridor, is what shapes local pest pressure differently from a straightforward small town. For more than 40 years, our family-owned team has protected Portland homes and businesses, from downtown out toward White House, Gallatin, and Cross Plains.

Being a historic railroad town that grew from strawberry farming into a distribution and warehouse hub shapes which pests show up and where. Here’s what we see most in Portland homes and businesses:

Historic Termites

Termites in historic railroad-era & farmhouse construction

Portland’s downtown buildings near the old L&N depot, along with the farmhouses that remain from the town’s strawberry-growing days, are exactly the kind of aging wood-frame construction subterranean termites target. They swarm in spring (typically March through May) and feed year-round below grade. An annual inspection and a monitored barrier matter especially for structures this old.

Barn & Farm Rodents

Barn & farm rodents

Though large-scale strawberry farming has faded, working farmland still surrounds much of Portland, and the barns and outbuildings on those properties give mice and rats food, cover, and warmth. It doesn’t take much for that population to move from a barn into a nearby home. We treat outbuildings and the house as one property, not two separate jobs.

Warehouse & Distribution

Warehouse & distribution facility pest pressure

Modern Portland is known for its distribution and warehouse facilities on both sides of the Sumner-Robertson county line, and that kind of industry brings real commercial pest pressure, stored-product pests, rodents, and ants drawn to large storage and shipping operations. We provide commercial pest programs for warehouses and factories built around production and shipping schedules, not disruption.

Ants, Wasps & Household Pests

Ants, wasps & household pests

Like any established Tennessee town, Portland sees a steady baseline of ants, wasps, and other household invaders working their way in around foundations and doorways, especially as crowds return each May for the Strawberry Festival. We treat the entry points as well as the interior, so the fix actually lasts.

Seasonal Rodents

The fall rodent push

As temperatures drop from September into November, mice and rats move off fields, fence lines, and warehouse grounds and into garages, crawlspaces, barns, and buildings looking for a warm winter home. Sealing entry points before the first cold snap is far easier than evicting an established population in January.

Your Portland Pest Calendar

What to expect through the year across Portland’s downtown, farmland, and warehouse corridor — and when to act:

Spring
(Mar–May)

Termite swarms begin around historic downtown and farmhouse construction, and ants and wasps become active right around Strawberry Festival season each May. Best window for a termite inspection.

Summer
(Jun–Aug)

Wasp and yellowjacket nests grow large in barns and around buildings; ant and rodent pressure builds around warehouse and distribution facilities.

Fall
(Sep–Nov)

Rodents move off fields, fence lines, and warehouse grounds and into barns, homes, and buildings ahead of winter. Prime time to seal up.

Winter
(Dec–Feb)

Rodents settle into barns, attics, and building voids; overwintering pests hide in wall voids. The quiet season to plan exclusion and lock in termite protection.

Yes. Many of Portland’s downtown buildings have original woodwork worth protecting, so we use methods suited to historic construction while still eliminating termites and other wood-destroying pests.

Subterranean termites typically swarm from March through May, but they feed year-round in our clay-heavy soil. An annual inspection, ideally before spring, catches activity early and keeps your barrier working.

  • This has been a great pest control service for our business and our personal home. They have demonstrated their commitment to addressing our pets control issues by servicing our business several times for a couple of months until the issue was resolved and still only charged us the regular monthly fee. I do recommend U.S. Pest.

  • We started using U.S. Pest to help control summer mosquitoes which made it miserable to be outside on our patio. The regular spraying has helped significantly. Philip has been great in communicating his visits to us and answering questions.
