Old Hickory began in 1918 as a planned company town, built almost overnight when DuPont contracted with the federal government to construct the world’s largest smokeless powder plant at Hadley’s Bend on the Cumberland River. DuPont designed the village to be self-sufficient, with its own hospital, churches, and civic buildings, and though the company didn’t sell homes to residents until 1946, many of the original bungalows and cottages in the historic Village of Old Hickory still stand today as part of a National Register historic district. The Cumberland River wraps the neighborhood’s north and west sides, and Old Hickory Lake, created when the river was dammed in 1954, borders it to the east, with Old Hickory Beach still a favorite local fishing spot. The manufacturing site itself is still active, now run by Magnera Corporation and Berry Global Fiberware. That mix, century-old company-town construction, double waterfront exposure, and an active industrial site, is what shapes local pest pressure differently from a standard suburb.
