The Ultimate Move-In Checklist (for Keeping Pests OUT)
You’ve signed the papers. You’ve got the keys. You’re ready to move into your new home and start the next chapter of your life. But hold up, before you roll out the welcome mat, make sure you’re not accidentally inviting pests to the housewarming party.
At U.S. Pest, we’ve seen what happens when people skip the bug basics during move-in. So here’s our no-nonsense, bug-busting checklist to help you move in smart, stay pest-free, and start fresh with total peace of mind.
1. Scope It Out Before You Settle In
Before the furniture hits the floor:
- Pop into crawlspaces, attics, and basements — pests love the places you forget about.
- Look for mud tubes, chewed wood, droppings, or webs. These are red flags for termites, rodents, and spiders.
- Turn on the flashlight under sinks and cabinets. If it’s dark, damp, and dusty… it’s bug heaven.
2. Seal Up the Sneaky Spots
Bugs don’t knock — they squeeze through cracks you can’t even see.
- Weatherstripping? Caulk? Yes and yes. Seal around pipes, windows, and door frames.
- Screens ripped? Swap them out. Even a tiny tear is an open invitation to flies and mosquitoes.
- Don’t forget the garage door! That’s a favorite entry point for critters on the move.
3. Deep Clean Like You Mean It
Even a spotless house can hide pest magnets.
- Wipe out drawers, cabinets, and pantry shelves.
- Vacuum corners, baseboards, and behind appliances.
4. Lock Down the Trash Situation
- Use sealed, heavy-duty bins inside and out.
- Take trash out often — pests love leftovers.
- Store pet food in airtight containers, not in open bags on the floor.
5. Fight the Drips and Dampness
Moisture = pests. Period.
- Check for leaky pipes, clogged gutters, or standing water.
- If you have a crawlspace, make sure the moisture barrier is intact.
- Don’t let humidity linger, use dehumidifiers when needed.
6. Trim Your Yard
Pests love to hide in the tall grass and sneak in first chance they get.
- Keep bushes, trees, and mulch away from the walls.
- Clear leaf piles, firewood stacks, and old debris.
- Mosquitoes can breed in just a capful of water, so drain flowerpots, toys, or anything that collects rain.
