Differences Between Firebrats and Silverfish

Firebrats bear a striking resemblance to silverfish. Both species are carrot-shaped in appearance, with wide heads and narrow bodies. Additionally, each species has long antennae and three prongs at the end of their abdomens.

There are, however, some differences between firebrats and silverfish. Firebrats have a mottled, grayish-brown, and yellow coloring, while silverfish are dark gray to silver in color.

The second differentiator between these two pests is the length of their bodies—firebrats are stouter than silverfish, which gives them an almost stumpy appearance in comparison to their longer, fish-like relative.

Where You Can Find Firebrats

Both firebrats and silverfish are attracted to moisture. There is a key difference between them, however; unlike silverfish, firebrats prefer areas with high temperatures. In fact, their legs can travel across extremely hot surfaces, such as furnaces and boilers.

While their preference for such extreme environments makes them more common in commercial spaces, such as bakeries or boiler rooms, they can still invade residences. Keep an eye out for firebrats in the following areas of your home:

  • Bathtubs
  • Attics
  • Dryers
  • Hot water heaters

When it comes to pests, the wisest choice is to leave the searching to the professionals. Without proper training and protective gear, you may stumble upon pests worse than firebrats, such as cockroaches or brown recluses.

Play it safe and schedule a free U.S. Pest Protection firebrat inspection.
