Pest Identification: Mosquitoes in Tennessee
Have you ever been enjoying a nice summer night outdoors, just to come inside and find that you are covered in itchy, irritating bug bites? It’s likely you have been bitten by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are extremely common in Tennessee and can be a headache to deal with. There are three types of mosquitoes commonly found in Tennessee: the Culex mosquito (also referred to as the house mosquito), the Asian tiger mosquito, and the yellow fever mosquito. At U.S. Pest Protection, our technicians are trained to control all three of these mosquito species.
Mosquitoes are definitely small but mighty, as they can transmit many different dangerous illnesses to humans. They can carry and transmit diseases such as Zika virus, malaria, and yellow fever, but in Tennessee, the West Nile virus is most common. Although this can sound frightening, there’s no need to worry; most mosquitoes don’t spread diseases. When bit, you are usually left with an itchy, irritated bump on your skin.
How to Identify Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are tiny bugs with wings, thin bodies, and long legs. They are usually less than 15 mm long and weigh less than 2.5 mg. Mosquitoes come in a plethora of colors ranging from yellow to brown to gray.
Where to Find Mosquitoes
Mosquitos can congregate both indoors, in your home and business, and outdoors, in your backyard. They are attracted to moisture and water, so they can be found near lakes, ponds, birdbaths, dog bowls, and more. Mosquitoes find their way indoors through open doors and windows, usually at night. They are also attracted to carbon dioxide, lactic acid, and octanol in our breath and sweat, which explains why they bite us so often.
