Pest Identification: Deer Ticks in Tennessee

Deer ticks, also known as black-legged ticks, are named after their preference to feed on white-tailed deer. They are mainly found in the eastern region of the United States, including Tennessee. Deer ticks are commonly mistaken for the American dog tick but can be identified by:

• Size: Deer ticks, about the size of a sesame seed, are much smaller than the common dog tick.
• Color: Deer ticks have a reddish body with black markings on their heads.
• Legs: Like many other ticks, deer ticks have six to eight legs.

Diseases Carried by Deer Ticks

Although deer ticks prefer to feed on deer and other mammals, they will occasionally feed on humans. A bite from a deer tick can be potentially dangerous, as they are known to spread severe illnesses such as Lyme disease.
