Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

According to the Center for Disease Control, Tennessee has one of the highest reports of incidence of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) in the country. Arm yourself with information about the possibly life-threatening disease and help protect your family.

RMSF is caused by a bite from an infected tick and usually materializes with a sudden onset of fever and headache. Symptoms can range from all to possibly none of the following:
  • Fever
  • Rash (occurs 2-5 days after fever, may be absent in some cases; see below)
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain (may be intense abdominal pain)
  • Muscle pain
  • Lack of appetite
  • Conjunctival injection (red eyes)
Although RMSF can be fatal, most patients respond favorably to prompt treatment, especially when treated quickly.
